TUCSON — Mark Wiebe led some spectacular scoring with an 11-under-par 61 that lifted him into a share of the lead Saturday in the third round of the $600,000 Tucson Open golf tournament.
Wiebe birdied 8 of his first 10 holes and came from 8 shots back with his career-best effort, which set a course record on the 7,010-yard TPC at StarPass and equaled the best round of the year on the PGA Tour.
He was tied at 199 with South African David Frost.
Frost had a 5-under-par 67--more or less average for the ideal playing conditions.
Mark O’Meara, who shot a bogey-free 65, was tied for third place at 201 with Curt Byrum and left-hander Russ Cochran, who led through the first two rounds. Byrum also shot a 65, and Cochran slipped to a 71.
Mark Calcavecchia made two eagles and played the par-5 holes 6 under par in a round of 63 that left him at 202.
