CARSON — George Bush won a landslide victory over his Democratic rival in Nevada and Republican Sen. Chick Hecht was leading in his race for a second term against popular Gov. Richard H. Bryan.
Bush was rolling up 61% of the vote to 37% for Michael S. Dukakis in a state that twice had given one-sided victories to Ronald Reagan.
The Senate race had opened with Hecht trailing as much as 30 points in opinion polls. But it ended a tossup in pre-election surveys.
Bryan suffered late in the campaign when Dukakis reversed himself and said he accepted Congress’ designation of Nevada as the site for the nation’s first high-level nuclear waste repository.
