Baldwin Park : Comments on Trash Pickup

As the city prepares to solicit bids on a new trash collection contract, the City Council is asking for public comment on proposed changes in collection services.
One proposed change is to have the contractor pick up bulky items, such as sofas and water heaters, on a quarterly basis. Under the current contract, residents can dispose of such bulky items on any collection day.
It now costs residents 50 cents a month for pickup of bulky items, said Dick Smith, director of community services. The total trash collection bill for each household is $8 a month.
At last week’s council meeting, Councilwoman Bette Lowes said quarterly pickups of bulky items would be less convenient to residents and may lead to illegal dumping.
As part of its contract preparation, the city will also explore the feasibility of collecting household hazardous waste and will ask for a shorter billing cycle, Smith said.
Mayor Leo King has asked residents to comment at the council’s Wednesday meeting.
