Chinese rescuers are being forced to trek on foot through heavily wooded mountain regions to reach some villages devastated by an earthquake that killed more than 930 people in southern China, Beijing Radio reported. It said the village of Zhanmapo, believed the worst hit with 297 dead, was accessible only by a footpath, and it had been blocked by a landslide. The quake that struck southwestern Yunnan province was China’s worst since a 1976 earthquake that killed 242,000 people. The Yunnan quake measured 7.6 on the Richter scale. The Ministry of Civil Affairs told U.N. relief agencies that more than 100,000 people were homeless, and the official China News Service said 1,986 were injured.
