Who’s Hot
Morningside quarterback Ernesto Carmicle rushed for 156 yards and 3 touchdowns and passed for 164 yards and 1 TD as the Monarchs beat South Torrance, 44-0, for their sixth straight win, clinching the Ocean League title.
Running back Earl Rhodes led Coast Christian to its 21st straight win by rushing for 187 yards and 1 touchdown in a 34-18 eight-man victory over Camp Kilpatrick. The junior has 3,228 yards and 48 TDs in the last two seasons.
Sophomore fullback Derek Sparks, picking up the slack for tailback Keith Mims (season-low 21 yards), rushed 20 times for 199 yards and 4 touchdowns to lead Banning over Crenshaw, 34-14.
Carson wide receiver Marquis Owens caught 3 touchdown passes to tie a school record and help the Colts rally for a 35-20 win over Dorsey.
Who’s Not
The South Bay’s longest football losing streak remained intact last week as Narbonne fell to San Pedro, 24-0. The Gauchos, losers of 21 consecutive games, can complete their second straight winless season today against Washington.
Bishop Montgomery, a successful team during non-league play, proved no match for the powers of the Angelus League. The Knights lost all 4 of their league games by a combined score of 134-41.
Palos Verdes, 4-0 in home games this season, watched its road record drop to 2-3 with a 38-23 loss at Beverly Hills. More importantly, the defeat all but eliminated the Sea Kings from playoff contention.
In losing to Rolling Hills, 17-0, Torrance suffered its second straight shutout and its fifth in nine games. The Tartars have scored only 23 points in their last eight games.
