NHL Roundup : With Only 12 Shots, Sabres Smother Flames, 3-2

Pierre Turgeon scored 2 goals Wednesday night, and the Buffalo Sabres made the most of a franchise-low 12 shots to knock off the Calgary Flames, 3-2, at Buffalo.
The Sabres’ previous record for fewest shots on goal was 14, set in their first NHL game in 1970.
Buffalo got even for a 9-0 loss to the Flames at Calgary last Saturday.
Turgeon broke a 1-1 tie at 4:17 of the second period with his eighth goal of the season, then made it 3-1 about 7 minutes later.
Calgary cut the Sabres’ lead to 3-2 midway through the third period on a goal by Hakan Loob, but Buffalo goalie Daren Puppa held off the Flames.
Edmonton 3, New Jersey 2--Glenn Anderson scored on a 2-on-1 breakaway with 14 seconds to left in overtime to give the Oilers a victory over the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.
The win moved the Oilers past the Kings and into second place in the Smythe Division, 1 point behind Calgary.
New Jersey’s Kirk Muller forced the overtime by scoring on a deflection from close-in with 5:38 left in regulation. Esa Tikkanen had given the Oilers a 2-1 lead just 2:33 earlier with a 35-foot slap shot.
Jimmy Carson scored for the Oilers in the first period, and Pat Verbeek got the Devils even with 4:20 left in the second period.
New York Rangers 5, Philadelphia 3--Ulf Dahlen had a goal and 2 assists as the Rangers broke a 3-game losing streak by beating the Flyers at New York to increase their lead in the Patrick Division.
The Rangers lead the Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins by 3 points.
The Flyers, trying to take the division lead, fell behind on first-period goals by Michel Petit and Dahlen and never caught up.
Dahlen assisted on Igor Liba’s first NHL goal at 2:03 of the second period and on Kelly Kisio’s goal in the third period as the Rangers beat the Flyers for the third straight time this season.
Detroit 6, Minnesota 3--Petr Klima, in his second game after returning from the minor leagues, broke a 3-3 tie with 6:59 left, and the Red Wings scored 5 goals in the third period to defeat the North Stars at Bloomington, Minn.
Minnesota took a 3-1 lead on goals by Brian Bellows and Dave Gagner in the second period before the Red Wings broke loose.
Minnesota has a 2-10-2 record and 6 points, fewest in the league.
Chicago 6, Montreal 6--Wayne Presley scored his first 2 goals of the season, while Denis Savard had 2 goals and 2 assists as the Blackhawks rallied from 2 goals down to tie the Canadiens at Chicago.
Presley got the tying goal at 6:46 of the third period.
Guy Carbonneau and Mats Naslund each had 2 goals for the Canadiens, who haven’t lost to the Blackhawks in 10 meetings (6-0-4) dating to Feb. 20, 1985.
Hartford 1, Vancouver 1--Paul MacDermid scored the tying goal midway through the second period to give the Whalers a tie with the Canucks at Vancouver.
Barry Pederson gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead just 2:16 before MacDermid scored his tying goal.
Ron Francis of Hartford and Petri Skriko of Vancouver both missed open nets in overtime.
