NFL Suspends 2 More Players for Drugs

Doug Smith, the starting nose tackle for the Houston Oilers, and Hal Garner, a reserve linebacker for the Buffalo Bills, were suspended for 30 days after testing positive for drugs, the National Football League announced Wednesday.
The NFL, which has suspended 22 players for drugs this season, did not disclose which substances triggered the bans.
Smith was having the best season of his pro career. He missed two practices earlier this season, however, and was sent home by Oiler Coach Jerry Glanville after returning to the team. Then, after a meeting with General Manager Ladd Herzeg, he resumed practice and said he had passed a drug test administered by the NFL.
Smith and Oiler officials weren’t available for comment.
Garner is the third Buffalo player suspended this season. Bruce Smith, an All-Pro defensive end, and running back Robb Riddick both have returned to the team. Garner, who started one game in 1986, sat out the 1987 season with a knee injury.
The Bills, claiming they don’t have a teamwide drug problem, said Garner began treatment immediately after being suspended and would not contest the ban.
