The Cal State Northridge campus was temporarily without electricity Thursday when a construction crew accidentally dug up a 34,500-volt line, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officials said.
A front-loader, being used to dig a foundation for student housing in the 18100 block of Lassen Street, struck the concrete-encased line at 10:18 a.m., knocking out seven power stations that supply electricity to the campus, DWP spokesman Ed Freudenburg said.
DWP crews were able to bring six of the stations back on line at 10:53 a.m. while the seventh, which supplies power to dormitories on the north side of campus, was not repaired until 1 p.m., Freudenburg said.
