Local News in Brief : State Officials to Brief Burbank on Toxic Air

South Coast Air Quality Management District officials will address the Burbank City Council on Tuesday about the city’s status as a “hot spot” for toxic air contaminants that could cause cancer.
The state officials will offer tips on how the city can reduce pollutants, city officials said. The discussion will take place during the council’s regular meeting at 7 p.m.
A report by the Los Angeles region’s air-pollution control agency said that the Burbank area, which includes Glendale, North Hollywood and Van Nuys, is one of three areas in Los Angeles County that state officials call hot spots. The areas show “significantly higher” concentrations of toxic air contaminants, officials say.
Those concentrations pose cancer risks that, while still low, are twice as high as other regions in Los Angeles, the report said. The other hot spots are Rancho Dominguez and Hawthorne.
