The percentage of new U.S. military recruits with AIDS infections is decreasing, apparently because more men who fear they may be infected aren’t signing up, federal health officials said. In the first six months of the military’s AIDS testing program, beginning in October, 1985, 15 out of every 10,000 recruits were found to show signs of AIDS virus infection. However, between October, 1987, and March, 1988, 12 in every 10,000 recruits were infected, the national Centers for Disease Control reported.
