Marrow Transplants Prove of Little Use to Chernobyl Victims

STOCKHOLM — Bone marrow transplants for victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster have been largely unsuccessful, a Soviet doctor was quoted today as saying.
Angelina Guskova, a Soviet Health Ministry official who leads a project to care for Chernobyl radiation victims, told the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet that only two of 13 people who received such transplants are still alive.
“Chernobyl has taught us that bone marrow transplants on radiation victims don’t have the same effect as on other patients,” she said.
