Prep Roundup : Mater Dei Rally Nips Woodbridge in 5-A Volleyball

Mater Dei High’s volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Woodbridge, 7-15, 3-15, 15-9, 15-6, 15-12, Thursday in a Southern Section 5-A playoff first-round match at Woodbridge.
Joli Eberhart had 25 kills and Debbie Quam had 30 assists for the Monarchs (9-5). Woodbridge finished 12-3.
Mater Dei will play Mira Costa on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
In other 5-A first-round matches:
Irvine 3, Tustin 0--Bev Oden had 9 kills and 12 blocks to lead Irvine to a 15-3, 15-4, 15-12 sweep. Irvine is 15-0. Tustin ended the season 10-5.
Corona del Mar 3, Dana Hills 0--Laurie Swain had 22 kills, 17 digs and 21 service aces as the Sea Kings (13-2) swept, 15-12, 15-8, 17-15.
In Southern Section 4-A first-round girls’ tennis:
Corona del Mar 18, Buena 0--Freshman Keri Phebus swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead Corona del Mar, the second-seeded team behind Miraleste, at home. Phebus is 41-1 for Corona del Mar (20-1). Michele McFarland and Courtney Strauss swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.
Edison 15, Marlborough 3--Kim Wallauer swept her sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Edison at Marlborough in a first-round match.
Estancia 10, Rollings Hills 8--Lara Pierson and Debbie Bowen swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, 6-0, 7-5, to clinch the match for host Estancia. Kari Deutsch and Shannon Suzuki, Estancia’s No. 1 doubles team, also swept, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
Fountain Valley 13, Beverly Hills 5--Fountain Valley’s No. 1 doubles team of Renee Urricariet and Marissa Mell swept, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, at Fountain Valley.
In 3-A play:
Capistrano Valley 18, Trabuco Hills 0--Page Bartelt swept her singles sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, to lead the host Cougars (17-1) in a first-round match.
Laguna Hills 14, El Toro 4--Host Laguna Hills swept all 9 sets in singles. Jenny Margues won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, Brook Fleming won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, and Noriko Hopkins won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, for the Hawks.
Dana Hills 16, Woodbridge 2--Kelly Green swept her singles sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, to lead host Dana Hills (15-3) in a first-round match.
In 2-A competition:
Katella 13, Long Beach Wilson 5--Lynn Vonusa swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, for Katella at Recreation Park in Long Beach.
Fullerton 14, Rowland 4--No. 1 singles player Loraine Lau swept, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, to lead host Fullerton. No. 2 singles player Kari Nelson also swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, for the Indians (14-4).
In 1-A:
Western 9, La Quinta 9 (Western wins on games, 76-71)--Jennifer Yu swept her sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Western (15-2) at La Quinta.
In 2-A water polo playoffs:
Valencia 17, Workman 6--Charlie Amoroso, Mickey Doi and John Myers each scored 4 goals to lead host Valencia in a first-round match. Myers scored 3 goals in the first quarter as the Tigers (17-6) led, 6-3. Doi had 3 goals in the second quarter as Valencia increased its lead to 10-4. Goalie Chris Eakin made 7 saves for the Tigers.
