Soprano Takes 1st Prize in Met’s Local Tryouts

Janet Momjian, a 25-year-old soprano from Los Angeles, took $3,900 in first-place prizes at the Western Regional Finals of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, held Saturday at Bovard Auditorium, USC. She will represent the region in March at the national finals in New York.
Second place and $2,800 went to another soprano, 31-year-old Carla Jamie Perez of Santa Barbara. Baritone Wei-Long Tao, 29, of Los Angeles, placed third and garnered $1,700, and 22-year-old baritone Earle Patriarco, also from Los Angeles, received $1,200 in Encouragement awards.
The judges were baritone William Warfield, mezzo Nedda Casei, Wolftrap Opera administrator Peter Russell and Met conductor William Vendice.
