After nearly 3 months of searching for a 79-year-old Huntington Beach woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, police said Wednesday that chances of finding her unharmed are slim.
“We fear that with the passage of time now, she might have met foul play,” Police Lt. Ed McErlain said.
Evelyn Hirth and her husband, Edward, 83, disappeared from their home on Aug. 26. He was found at a Carlsbad motel 4 days later but told police he could not remember where he left his wife or their car.
The couple’s 1985 Chevrolet Caprice was later found in a parking lot in Oceanside, but authorities said they have not determined how it got there.
Police said suspicion first fell on the couple’s 21-year-old grandson, who was seen with his grandparents the day they disappeared, but the grandson was released the same day he was arrested.
Mrs. Hirth is a white woman with gray hair and brown eyes, 5 feet, 5 inches tall and about 160 pounds. She wears prescription eyeglasses and was dressed in a dress with yellow stripes when she disappeared.
