Local News in Brief : Revamped Pageant on Saturday

On Saturday, the Lawndale Chamber of Commerce will hold the first Miss Centinela Valley Scholarship Pageant--without financial support from city government.
The chamber dropped the “Lawndale” from the former Miss Lawndale Pageant earlier this year after a 3-member majority of the City Council--Councilmen Harold E. Hofmann, Larry Rudolph and Dan McKenzie--argued that the chamber should be self-supporting and cut the business organization off.
In previous years, the city gave the chamber $25,000 to put on four community events including the pageant, as well as $45,000 from business license bevenues for general support.
To make up the difference, the chamber recruited commercial sponsors and is selling tickets for the event, according to Chairwoman Laura Calderwood. Six young women are competing for scholarships and a chance to participate in the Miss California and Miss America contests, she said.
Marlise Richardos, the current Miss California and a runner-up to Miss America, will help conduct the pageant in Aviation Auditorium, at Aviation Boulevard and Manhattan Beach Boulevard in Redondo Beach. The doors will open at 6:15 p.m., and the pageant will start at 7 p.m.
Tickets at the door will be $12 for adults, $6 for children under 12, and $3 for senior citizens.
