Rodney Peete and Erik Affholter, USC’s one-two passing combination, and UCLA cornerback Darryl Henley were named to the 1988 Kodak Coaches All-American Team.
Also named was Barry Sanders, a junior from Oklahoma State, who became only the third running back in college football history to rush for over 2,000 yards. He also set single-season records for points scored and touchdowns.
Also chosen were running back Tim Worley of Syracuse; wide receiver Jason Phillips of Houston; tight end Marv Cook of Iowa; offensive linemen Tony Mandarich of Michigan State, Anthony Phillips of Oklahoma, Mark Stepnoski of Pittsburgh, Mike Utley of Washington State and Steve Wisnewski of Penn State, and kicker Kendall Trainor of Arkansas.
Named to the defensive team were linemen Tracy Rocker of Auburn, Mark Messner of Michigan, Broderick Thomas of Nebraska, Derrick Thomas of Alabama and Bill Hawkins of Miami; linebackers Britt Hager of Texas and Jerry Olsavsky of Pittsburgh; backs Deion Sanders of Florida State, Louis Oliver of Florida and Donnell Woolford of Clemson, and punter Pat Thompson of BYU.
