The World : Israeli Jets Raid Lebanon

Israeli warplanes blasted guerrilla bases in southern Lebanon, killing six people, on the 45th anniversary of the nation’s independence. One of the targets of the Israeli raid was the biggest refugee camp in Lebanon, Ein el Hilwa, where nine people were wounded. Meanwhile, in Beirut, Muslim and Christian units of Lebanon’s 42,000-member army staged separate parades to mark independence from France in 1943. Acting Premier Salim Hoss, a Sunni, and the rival head of the Christian Cabinet, Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun, delivered separate speeches. The split celebrations reflected the continuing political crisis that has left Lebanon without a president for two months.
