COLON, El Salvador — Leftist guerrillas burned government offices and captured five soldiers in a raid Tuesday on this town on the Pan American Highway, less then 12 miles from the capital of San Salvador, witnesses said.
Residents told reporters that government troops took two hours to arrive, by which time the rebels had dynamited the mayor’s office, the telephone exchange, a gas station and a civil defense post.
Four government militiamen and their sergeant surrendered as soon as the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front rebels entered the town, they added.
