Texas A&M; officials met for 4 hours with National Collegiate Athletic Assn. representatives and George Smith, the player who recanted his earlier allegation that Coach Jackie Sherrill paid him “hush money.”
School President William H. Mobley said that the university has a sworn statement, signed by Smith, that has been turned over to the NCAA.
The Dallas Morning News reported last week that Smith said Sherrill paid him money to keep quiet about NCAA violations. He has since said he made up the story and that the $1,100 to $1,400 he received was not hush money but was money lent to him by Sherrill.
Sherrill, in his first public appearance since the allegations surfaced, said he would not comment on the matter until after the football season and the completion of an internal investigation by the school.
