The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team, coming off its most successful season at the Division I level, returns five letter winners as the Lions open the season tonight in the Titan Converse Classic at Cal State Fullerton.
The Lions, 15-15 last season under fourth-year Coach Todd Corman, will face host Fullerton at 6 p.m. In the other tourney opener, St. Mary’s College faces Division II powerhouse Cal Poly Pomona. Friday’s losers play at 6 p.m. Saturday, while the winners play for the championship at 8.
The Lions will start 6-foot-1 junior Michelle Bettencourt and 5-11 senior Regan O’Hara at forward, 6-3 sophomore Tricia Gibson at center and sophomores Kristen Bruich and Lynn Flanagan at guard. All are returning starters, though Bettencourt missed much of last season with injuries. Bruich was the team’s leading scorer as a freshman at 10 points per game. Top reserves include freshman forward Joelle Longobardi, junior swing player Chris Hagemann.
