The World : Israeli Landing Reported
Israeli warplanes blasted guerrilla positions today in hills overlooking the Lebanese coastal town of Naame, south of Beirut, as they tried to rescue trapped paratroopers who landed by helicopter before dawn, police in Lebanon said. At least one Israeli soldier was reported killed and two others wounded in a clash between the Israeli landing party and guerrillas of the pro-Syrian Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine--General Command, which still holds two Israeli soldiers captured more than a year ago. “Other Israeli troops have been captured, but we do not know their number yet,” said a police officer in Naame. There was no immediate confirmation from Israel. Gunboats cruised off Naame as five helicopter gunships hovered overhead, apparently trying to evacuate the paratroopers, police added.
