Kodak Develops Blood Analyzer for NASA

Associated Press

Eastman Kodak Co. has developed a blood analyzer that works in zero gravity conditions for use aboard the U.S. space station scheduled to go into orbit in 1995.

Company officials said the analyzer uses no liquid chemicals and will allow medical personnel on the ground to evaluate illness and other conditions of the crew.

“Kodak dry-chemistry technology is ideally suited to the space environment in terms of compactness, convenience and storage,” said John Zeman, vice president and general manager, Clinical Products division.

The prototype analyzer is being tested by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is one of two diagnostic systems Kodak is designing for the space station.

NASA officials have also asked Kodak to develop an innovative X-ray system that will permit images to be taken in space and transmitted to the ground for evaluation.
