UC Riverside Stuns No. 4 Iowa From Long Range

HONOLULU — Maurice Pullum and Pat Viera each had five of UC-Riverside’s Division II-record 21 3-point baskets, helping the Highlanders upset No. 4 Iowa, 110-92, Sunday night in the championship game of the Chaminade Christmas tournament.
Riverside (9-1) was 12 for 18 on 3-point attempts in the second half and 21 of 36 for the game. Cal State Sacramento had the previous record of 18 3-pointers, set in 1987.
“It’s our biggest game,” said Riverside Coach John Masi. “We’ve never played a ranked team before.”
“Iowa’s big,” Masi said. “They’ve got 6-8, 6-9 people. We can’t go inside. That’s common sense.”
Nine 3-point baskets, three each by Chris Ceballos and Pullum, gave Riverside a 50-46 halftime lead.
The Highlanders streaked to a 65-51 lead with 17:05 left with five consecutive 3-point baskets, three by Viera.
Pullum ended the night with 33 points, Ceballos had 20 and Viera added 15. B.J. Armstrong had 21 points for the Hawkeyes (9-1).
