Thousands of Sudanese Protest Sugar Prices

KHARTOUM, Sudan — Thousands of people demonstrated in Khartoum and two provincial towns Tuesday against a government-ordered, 500% increase in sugar prices, witnesses and reports reaching Khartoum said.
Hundreds of riot police were deployed in the capital to control the demonstrations, which called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sadek Mahdi’s coalition government. However, no clashes between police and demonstrators were reported.
