Susan Butcher seeks her fourth consecutive victory in the 1,168-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race from Anchorage to Nome, which began in a wind that lowered the wind-chill factor to 22 degrees below zero.
The Iditarod commemorates a 1925 serum run to Nome when sled dog teams relayed medicine to fight a diphtheria outbreak in Alaska.
