Local News in Brief : Bradley, Gates Help Kick Off Bond Drive

Mayor Tom Bradley and Police Chief Daryl F. Gates ventured to the North Hollywood police station Tuesday to kick off a campaign to support Proposition 2, a $176-million bond issue designed to build new police stations and improve existing facilities throughout Los Angeles if approved by voters April 11.
Gates characterized the North Hollywood station--where 40 detectives work in a room about the size of a double garage--as an example of the overcrowding and deterioration Prop. 2 is meant to solve.
“These are the detectives you depend on to solve complicated crimes,” the chief said. “They don’t have the area to work privately at all. How they do it, I don’t know .”
Improvements under the proposal include building a new police station near Van Nuys Airport and upgrading 19 police stations, the department’s police academy and the downtown communications center where all 911 calls in the city are received and dispatched.
Proposition 2 requires two-thirds voter approval. If it passes, the general obligation bonds would be repaid with property taxes.
