STATE : Assembly Gets Assault Weapon Bill

SACRAMENTO — The Assembly’s fiscal committee today sent to the Assembly floor a bill that would ban manufacture and sale of about four dozen models of semi-automatic assault weapons.
The Ways and Means Committee voted 14 to 3 for AB357 by Assemblyman Mike Roos (D-Los Angeles). All the yes votes were cast by Democrats and all the noes by Republicans.
The bill would ban the manufacture, importation, sale or possession of a list of specified assault pistols, rifles and shotguns. It would allow people who possess the guns at present to keep them by getting state permits. One of the banned weapons would be the AK-47, the type of semi-automatic assault rifle used by Patrick Purdy in killing five children and wounding 28 children and a teacher in a Stockton schoolyard on Jan. 17.
