SportScope : Junior Kings Win State Pee Wee Hockey

The Junior Kings, a youth ice hockey team with members from Palos Verdes, captured the Pee Wee state championship last week at Fresno and advanced to the Western Regionals on March 16 at Spokane, Wash. The Junior Kings defeated an all-star team from Northern California twice. Leon Rodriguez, Richard Park and Jamie Hanford, all of Palos Verdes, are members of the Junior Kings, an all-star team of 12- and 13-year-olds. The team competes in tournaments in the United States and Canada and represents the Southern California Amateur Hockey Assn. and are sponsored by the Los Angeles Kings.

Richard Koo of Hawthorne used a 5-wood to score a hole in one on the 205-yard 17th hole at the Sepulveda Dam course in Encino. It was his first ace. He has been playing golf for eight years.

Racing returns to Ascot Raceway March 18 with the California Racing Assn. sprint car series. On March 19 stock cars return in the NASCAR Racing Series for pro stocks and bomber Figure 8, oval cars and hobby stocks. Both cards begins at 8 p.m.

The Olympic Velodrome at Cal State Dominguez Hills will be the site for the Golden State Gran Prix bicycle racing series, which begins April 16. The nine-race event ends Sept. 24.

The fifth Palos Verdes Figure Skating Championships begin at 8 a.m. Sunday at Ice Capades Chalet in The Shops at Palos Verdes shopping mall in Rolling Hills Estates. The competition is open to boys and girls ages 4 to 14 who are registered with the U.S. Figure Skating Assn. club members with the All Year Figure Skating Club.

High school basketball players will register for the American Roundball Corp. spring league at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Harbor College.
