Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has removed Lt. Gen. Hamid Gul, the powerful chief of army intelligence, who handed out millions of dollars in American military assistance to Afghan rebels. Gul was transferred to army headquarters in Rawalpindi, a Defense Ministry spokesman. He reportedly has been replaced by retired army Gen. Shamsur Rahman Kallu. Gul gave the U.S. assistance to Afghan anti-Communist forces headquartered in Pakistan. Gul came under fire from moderate guerrilla groups for giving most of the aid to hard-line Islamic fundamentalists, the Hizb-i-Islami.
