STATE : Air Crash Suits Settled Out of Court

A trial to determine liability for the 1987 Pacific Southwest Airlines crash that killed 42 persons near San Luis Obispo ended abruptly today when families of five victims agreed to out-of-court settlements for unspecified amounts of money.
In exchange, the families agreed to drop lawsuits against PSA, USAir, the City of Los Angeles and an airport security company. Four other plaintiffs also agreed to settlements in exchange for jury trials for damages.
The Dec. 7, 1987, crash occurred when a former USAir ticket agent, David A. Burke, 35, of Long Beach, smuggled a gun aboard the San Francisco-bound flight and opened fire on the flight crew and his former supervisor who just hours earlier had refused to rehire him.
