El Segundo will be gunning for its third American Legion area baseball title in four years when it opens the 19th District/4th Area tournament Saturday at Blair Field in Long Beach.
The Eagles, champions in 1986 and ‘87, face Millikan at 11 a.m. in the first game of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament. El Segundo (22-6-2) captured the Bay-Pacific League title with a 9-0 record while Millikan took fourth in the Harbor League.
Unbeaten right-hander Rick Clark, who was 10-0 last spring to help El Segundo High win the CIF 2-A title, is scheduled to start. Other standouts for the Eagles include catcher Garret Quaintance, center fielder Erik Evans and shortstop Mark Lewis.
In other openers Saturday, Palos Verdes faces defending area champion Gahr at 1:30 p.m., La Serna meets Hawthorne at 4:30 and Lakewood plays Miraleste at 7:30. The losers play at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, with the winners meeting at 4:30 and 7:30.
Games will continue through Friday, if necessary.
The area champion advances to the American Legion State Tournament on Aug. 5-9 in Yountville.
