A Soviet trumpeter with the Bolshoi orchestra has defected to Switzerland, Swiss radio reported Saturday. The defection occurred in Zurich three weeks ago when 26-year-old Ilia Shkolnik refused to join his orchestra boarding a plane to return to Moscow. He said he had dreamed for a year of leaving the Soviet Union because of obstacles he said the Soviet Culture Ministry had placed in his career as a soloist. The radio reports said Shkolnik was with friends in the town of Bulle awaiting a ruling from the Swiss authorities on his request for asylum.
