Berkeley police took into custody a 39-year-old Texas man who had reportedly followed Justine Bateman, an actress who starred in the “Family Ties” television series. John Thomas Smetek was held for psychiatric examination after appearing outside the Berkeley Repertory Theater with a loaded revolver pressed to his abdomen. Lt. Robert Peters said Smetek had been trailing the 23-year-old Bateman for months. Bateman’s publicist, Cindy Guagenti, said the actress was aware that Smetek was pursuing her and had notified police and hired a private security firm.
