COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked UC Irvine Upset in Water Polo, 8-6

UC Irvine, the top-ranked water polo team in the country, lost to Pepperdine, 8-6, Sunday in a Big West Conference match at Malibu.
The third-ranked Waves (17-4 overall, 6-0 in conference) were led by Sasa Poljak, Geoffrey Clark and Paul Matarangasi, with three goals each. Julian Harvey had three goals and Pablo Yrizar two for Irvine (16-3, 4-1).
The defeat halted a six-game winning streak by the Anteaters, who play host to No. 6 UCLA at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Irvine’s Heritage Park.
In Big West men’s soccer:
Fresno State 2, UC Irvine 1--Chris Johnson scored with about seven minutes remaining in the match to lead the Bulldogs (13-1, 7-0) at Irvine (2-12-1, 0-7).
Johnson headed in the game-winning goal off Irvine’s halfback-turned-goalkeeper Mark Kirsch, who replaced injured goalie Damon Ellis with about 13 minutes remaining.
Ralph Guzman scored 13 minutes into the match to give Irvine a 1-0 lead. Vince Martinez tied the score for Fresno State with 10 minutes left in the first half.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
Cal State Los Angeles 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Mike Gregorian scored his 15th and 16th goals of the season for the Golden Eagles (10-5-3) at home. Fullerton is 9-6-1.
In nonconference women’s soccer:
California 4, UC Irvine 0--The Golden Bears (12-3-1) took a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by Joy Biefeld of Edison High School, and extended it when Devon Fitzpatrick, Danielle Compton and Valerie Pope scored in the second half at Irvine (5-9-3).
