THE SIDELINES : Wind, Slush Cancel Ski Race

VAL GARDENA, Italy — Strong winds at the top and melting snow on the bottom of the Saslong course today wiped out the first men’s downhill race of the World Cup season.
The race originally was moved to this Dolomite resort from Val d’Isere because of lack of snow in the French resort.
A second downhill race was scheduled here Saturday. A men’s slalom will be raced in nearby Madonna di Campiglio on Sunday.
Today’s race was canceled with 74 skiers already in the starting area.
“The wind was really too strong on the top,” Italian downhiller Danilo Sbardellotto said. “Our safety would have been at risk.”
At the same time, the temperature at the finish line had climbed to 45, compared to 14 on practice day Thursday.
