NATION : Ex-Police Officer Guilty of Fraud

DETROIT — A former deputy chief of Detroit’s police department was convicted today on federal charges of defrauding investors of millions of dollars in a scheme run while he was with the department.
Kenneth Weiner, 44, was convicted of 44 counts of fraud and income tax evasion. Co-defendants Dr. Steven Lewin, 44, and Alvin Gendelman, 58, were convicted of 36 and 38 counts, respectively. Jurors had deliberated for a week.
In the trial that ended today, the three defendants were accused of bilking more than 100 investors out of the money over several years. They face a maximum five years in prison and $250,000 fine on each count. No sentencing date was set.
Prosecutors charged that the three lured investors into the pyramid scheme with promises of lucrative returns on investments in precious metals.
