Kremlin Crackdown in Lithuania

The height of cynicism has been attained when the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize sends troops and tanks against unarmed civilians in Lithuania who are protecting democratically elected institutions (Part A, Jan. 13). When Lithuania declared independence March 11, 1990, editorials in The Times were in tune with the bland comments of President Bush, counseling patience and negotiations with Moscow.
The Lithuanians acquiesced to this advice, and the results can be seen in nauseating detail--Soviet troops shooting and clubbing unarmed civilians, killing 14 and hospitalizing 150.
