Schools Begin Push for Amnesty Classes

The Los Angeles Unified School District has begun an intensive public education campaign aimed at getting immigrants to take advantage of the district’s free amnesty classes.
“This is a critical campaign for the amnesty applicants who have not yet started” applying for permanent U.S. residence, said James Figueroa, the district’s assistant superintendent for adult education. The district’s Amnesty Education Program teaches immigrants English-language skills and basic facts about U.S. government and history, Figueroa said.
Ernest Gustafson, former Los Angeles district director of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, said 44% of those who applied for amnesty--1.2 million people--did so in the Los Angeles area.
