Gulf War Exposes U.S. Bias Against Blacks, China Says

BEIJING — China told its 1.1 billion people Friday that the Gulf War has exposed official U.S. discrimination against blacks, making them shoulder an unfairly heavy burden of the fighting.
A commentary in the official People’s Daily said that more black families are worrying about their loved ones because blacks account for disproportionately high numbers in the U.S. Army.
“This shows the overly heavy burden of blacks and the discrimination by the government toward minority groups,” the commentary said.
“Operation Desert Storm has blown the cover off” (racial discrimination in the United States), it said.
The Pentagon had said previously that it has not and will not compile the numbers of blacks in the armed forces or serving in the Gulf, but estimates of blacks in the services overall range from 19% to 30%.
Blacks number 31 million of a total U.S. population of 249 million.
