The Hart High front line of Keith Halcovich, Ali Peek and Marty Downen call themselves the Newhall Power Co. Friday night the trio combined for 48 points as Hart clinched the Foothill League with a 70-64 victory over visiting Burroughs.
Halcovich finished with a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds. “We have to dominate inside for us to win,” Halcovich said.
Hart (18-6, 9-1) led, 66-58, with 54 seconds left, but Burroughs (11-10, 5-5), the two-time defending league champion, almost pulled the plug on Hart’s celebration.
Burroughs closed to 67-64 with seven seconds to play on back-to-back drives by Chris Suarez.
However, Burroughs was whistled for a technical for calling a timeout with none remaining and Tony Valenzuela made one of two technical-foul shots and a pair of foul shots to preserve the victory.
