World IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : Tamil Rebels Kill 44 in Army Patrol

Tamil separatists ambushed an army patrol, killing 44 of the soldiers and wounding eight others, a senior military official said. He said that helicopter gunships were called in as the guerrillas fled, and at least five of the rebels were killed. About 300 of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam force were believed involved in the attack near the Tamil-dominated port city of Mannar, 195 miles north of Colombo, the capital.
