TENNIS ROUNDUP : Oh, Brother: John and Patrick Make It an All-McEnroe Final

Top-seeded John McEnroe set up a family showdown against younger brother Patrick in the final of the Volvo Chicago indoor tournament by eliminating MaliVai Washington, 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, Saturday night.

The elder McEnroe, a former No. 1 player, will be going for his 107th career singles title. Patrick, who beat Grant Connell of Canada, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, earlier in the day, will be playing for his first title.

“If I don’t beat my brother on Sunday, I won’t be able to show my face on the planet for six months,” John said.

Looking at it a bit more seriously, John added, “I may lose this match and have to live with it, and I think I can live with it.”

The McEnroes have played only once before, with John beating Patrick, 6-2, 6-1, in 1985 at Stratton, Vt. And that wasn’t a final.

“I have to sit and think about it tonight,” John said. “I’ve never had to deal with this before. I have to stop and realize I have a wonderful wife and two kids, a beautiful home, and I’ve made more money than I ever expected I would, and I’ve won more tournaments than I ever expected.

“It’s just one more tournament I have to think about, so I won’t jump off the Empire State Building.”

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl beat Swede Anders Jarryd, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the final of a $450,000 tournament at Rotterdam, Netherlands. He will face Italian Omar Camporese, who beat Dutchman Paul Haarhuis, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6.
