After 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, including two overtime periods, Newport Harbor and Corona Centennial settled for a 0-0 tie in the Southern Section Division 1-A championship at Gahr High.
Both teams were declared co-champions. Neither school had reached the soccer final before.
“This is OK with me,” Newport Harbor Coach Alan Layne said. “It’s much better to be a co-champion than to have either side win on stupid penalty kicks. Penalty kicks don’t give the correct result of a game.”
In the 3-A title game at Gahr, Bell Gardens defeated El Dorado, 3-2. In 4-A, Diamond Bar defeated Fontana, 1-0, in overtime.
