Northrop University Won’t Lose Its Accreditation

Northrop University will not lose its accreditation as originally recommended, but the Inglewood engineering school is being urged to beef up its academic program.

The Western Assn. of Schools and Colleges voted in 1989 to strip the university’s accreditation because of ethical violations in recruiting foreign students, awarding credits and bookkeeping practices involving millions of dollars. The report, which questioned the school’s “institutional integrity,” prompted the resignation of Northrop’s former president, B.J. Shell.

Because Northrop has addressed many of the concerns since President John Beljan took over, the association reported that it has rescinded its previous ruling but is still recommending more financial stability and a better education program.
