Senior Mike Bovee helped stretch top-ranked Mira Mesa’s unbeaten string to 8-0 while Santana suffered its first loss of the season, 8-0, in the championship of the Madison Warhawk Tournament Monday night at Smith Field.
Bovee, a senior right-hander, pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out 11 while allowing five hits, to lead the Marauders, who have won 13 consecutive games. The victory was also the fourth shutout by Mira Mesa this season. Bovee is 2-0. The Sultans fell to 6-1-1.
The Marauders broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. They broke open the game with four more in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by designated hitter Frankie Edsall’s two-run home run off Chad Berry. Berry went the distance, allowing seven hits, and suffered the loss for the Sultans.
Berry was his own worst enemy in the third, as his wild pick-off throw allowed two runs to score. Karl Goins singled in P.J. Henry, who had opened the inning with a walk, for first run and went to second on the throw home. Goins then scored behind Jason Payne (bunt single), who was on third base when Berry tried to pick him off but threw the ball into left field.
Crawford Tournament
Clairemont 10, Crawford 0--David Salonius (1-0) and Danny Langford combined to pitch a one-hitter as the Chiefs (1-4-1) won the consolation game. Salonius, a senior right-hander, struck out eight in four innings and went three for four, with three RBIs and a two-run homer, at the plate. Craig Goodwin was four for four with three RBIs. Crawford fell to 1-5.
