Declaring Independents: American independent filmmakers, who often win awards at film festivals but find it hard to obtain theatrical distribution, will have a chance to show their works at a new U.S. Independent Showcase established by the American Film Institute. The MacArthur Foundation has given AFI $60,000 to set up the showcase. Films will have a seven-day booking at the Laemmle Monica in Santa Monica, starting April 26.
