Ice Kings: Sunday’s Los Angeles Kings-Edmonton Oilers hockey game, the Kings’ first contest carried by a non-cable Los Angeles television station since 1985, was a ratings hit, outdrawing all but one of the day’s TV sporting events. The Kings 4-3 overtime win earned a 5 Nielsen rating for KTLA Channel 5, meaning it was seen in about 250,000 households. The only event to top it was the Duke-St. John NCAA basketball Midwest Regional Final on KCBS Channel 2, which received a 5.9 rating (296,000 households). Meanwhile, the debut of the World League of American Football didn’t fare as well on ABC. The New York/New Jersey Knights-Barcelona Dragons game had a 3.6 overnight rating in 24 major metered markets.
