Nation IN BRIEF : NATIONWIDE : Drug Cuts Infections in AIDS Patients

The drug ditiocarb sodium appears effective in reducing the number of life-threatening infections in patients with the AIDS virus, researchers reported. The drug significantly reduced the number of infections among 387 AIDS patients in a 24-week study conducted at eight medical centers around the country. The new treatment is not a cure for AIDS but appears to reduce the number of infections, which is important for prolonging the lives of AIDS patients. Scientists are unsure exactly how the drug may protect against infections.
