Day, 3 Other Arkansas Players Suspended

Arkansas basketball star Todd Day and three teammates were suspended from the team for a year for their part in a sexual incident at the athletic dormitory, two highly placed university sources said. Day was the Southwest Conference’s most valuable player last season.

The players can appeal the ruling to administrators. The ruling does not preclude the players from attending school, according to the sources, who spoke on condition they not be named.

A 34-year-old Springdale, Ark., woman, who said she was sexually assaulted on Feb. 27, implicated four players. They admitted having sex with her but said she consented. Police said the woman was drunk. The local prosecutor said there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute the players.

According to sources, other suspended players are juniors Darrell Hawkins and Roosevelt Wallace and freshman Elmer Martin. Only Day was a full-time starter.
