Owner Changes Mind; Best Pal Will Get Chance to Run in Kentucky Derby
- Share via
Best Pal, runner-up to Dinard in the Santa Anita Derby, will leave for Churchill Downs Monday to prepare for the Kentucky Derby.
Owner John Mabee had said the Habitony gelding needed to win the Santa Anita Derby to go to Kentucky, but he called trainer Ian Jory Wednesday morning and said the 3-year-old would take another crack at Dinard and Fly So Free at Churchill Downs. There had been discussion that Best Pal would instead run in next Saturday’s Arkansas Derby.
“It was his decision, but I’m glad we’re going,” Jory said. “He’ll be leaving on the same plane as Dinard.”
